The Senate approved the third and final reading of Bill No. 1822, otherwise known as the National Autism Care, Support, and Inclusion Act, on March 9, 2026. With a unanimous vote of 20-0 and no abstentions, the bill intends to establish a comprehensive and permanent support for Filipinos with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Senator Risa Hontiveros, the sponsor of SB No. 1822, said that the bill not only intends to provide care for Filipinos with ASD, but also to increase the number of specialists for persons with autism (PWAs). This is to address the unsung issue of a lack of health care specialists for PWAs across the country. Among the key provisions are early diagnosis, therapy, rehabilitation, and vocational training for adults with autism. The bill also proposes other key aspects such as a comprehensive care plan for lifelong support, education and employment, workforce development, and institutional structure.
“Asahan po ninyo na hindi po kami bibitaw, kasama po ninyo kaming lahat sa adbokasiyang ito. They are human beings who deserve equal rights and respect,” said Senator Risa Hontiveros during her speech about National Autism Care at an event last May 2025.
